Cowaramup

Heart of the Northern Wine District

Cowaramup, Western Australia The quaint little town of Cowaramup is located on the Bussell Highway, 12km north of Margaret River, in Western Australia's south-west region. The townsite was named after the Cowaramup Sidings, which was located near the townsite on the Busselton to Augusta railway. Cowaramup was derived from the Aboriginal word for the Purple Crowned Lorikeet, "Cowara". However, locals are often heard referring to the town as 'cowtown'. I guess this is because the town is located in the centre of the regions dairy industry.

Cowaramup, Western AustraliaDuring the 1930's Cowaramup was mainly a timber and dairy town but today it is also in the heart of the northern wine district.

In the 1970's the first vines were planted in Cowaramup, by Dr Cullity, on the Vasse Felix Estate. This would prove to be the beginning of a wine industry boom which continues to sweep through the region. The bird depicted on the Vasse Felix label is that of the Peregrine Falcon. This being in honour of the birds that Cullity trained to scare off the native parrots which were eating his crops, which I assume were the Purple Crowned Lorikeets, the town's namesake.

It's Their Business

Cowaramup, Western AustraliaThis small town offers a variety of unique wineries and businesses. Some of the main wineries are Vasse Felix , Cullen Wines , Howard Park Wines , Madfish , Settlers Ridge , Stellar Ridge Estate , Brookwood Vineyard Estate , and Palandri .

This town is also home to the popular Margaret River Dairy Company , which specialises in Brie Cheese and yoghurts. The factory can be found along the Bussell Highway.

Leonie from Cowaramup
Ok I am biased - I am the founder of Moon Haven, but as a local I can let you in on one of hte best kept secrets in the region. Cowaramup is certainly well worth a stop on your tour of the area. With new owners Romano & Alison at Margaret Riviera and their amazing culinary delights - you will ove their offerings. Of course Candy Cow is a must do for all the family. The newish Grpaevine gift shop is worth a poke around - especially for wine related accessories, and of course you are most welcome at Moon Haven where we not only make some of the best skin saving natural soap and muscle relaxing soaks and rubs but have an extensive array of fairies and giftware. People call it enchanting.
So do call into our village - most people are amazed at what they find here and make sure that they never miss it again...
